What’s more, our approach eliminates the most serious pitfall of traditional methods of odor detection training: handler dependance. That’s because traditional methods associate the toy-reward with the odor itself. They trick the dog into thinking the place of the toy equals the place of the odor. And when the dog is weaned off the toy, the dog becomes more and more handler focused, looking for small body signs that might indicate where to look to get the toy.
Handler involvement is a BIG issue in the courts of law where K9 handlers must PROVE that its the dog alone who finds the source of the odor. Handler help with indication can result in a case thrown out.
Dogs trained the Zauberberg way are NOT handler dependent. Our dogs are not tricked into believing that the place of the odor equals the place of the toy. Our dogs do not have to be “weaned” off the toy. In fact, the sight of the toy in the handler’s hand becomes the cue for the dog to SEARCH for the target odor.
